Matthew 17-18~ Day 9~ Man's responsibility

As you know, I am reading a different version this time around, the Christian Standard Version. The different wording made this verse stand out to me today, "For offenses will inevitable come, but woe to that person by whom the offense comes.  If your hand or your foot causes you to fall away, cut it off and throw to away ( Matt. 18:7-8).

Wait a minute! Jesus said something very similarly in chapter 5; gouge out your eye, or cut off your hand if they causes you to sin (5:29-30).  In today's reading he reiterates again with the hand, foot or eye.  These verses illustrate the idea that man holds a responsibility in his salvation.
Jesus calls us to extreme action.  If we fail in that action, off to hell we go!  (18:8 & 9)
I didn't say it, he did! 😳
In all my reading and pondering of the New Testament, I have come to a conclusion about God's sovereignty and man's responsibility.  Both are true!  It's hard to understand with my human brain, but if the Bible speaks of both, both co-exist.  I am not the only one who has struggled with this concept and came to this conclusion.
C.H. Spurgeon (a famous preacher in the 1800's) is quoted as saying the two are "Friends", not needing to be reconciled to each other.  J.I. Packer (famous theologian popular in the 70's) says, "Divine sovereignty and human responsibility are not enemies.  They are not uneasy neighbors, they are not in an endless state of cold war with each other.  They are friends, and they work together."

I'll go with that, because it makes sense when you see all the verses that back both sides.  It makes today's reading VERY weighty doesn't it?  We better get rid of the things or people in our lives that cause us to sin.  It's our responsibility to do so!!
