1 Kings 13- 19- Stay devoted to God alone!!

I sure did get some applicable gems out of this weeks reading!

One gem that stood out to me was, where one lives has a big influence on their world view!  You better not let your culture sway you from a pure devotion to God!

Remember Jeroboam fled to Egypt and lived there for awhile (11:40).  He was surrounded by polytheism when he lived there.  When he came back to Israel, he should have known better!  Earlier in his life the prophet told him,  "If you listen to all that I (God) command you, walk in my ways, and do what is right in my sight by keeping my statutes and my commandments, as David my servant did, I will be with you," (11:38). But his time in a polytheistic culture made him forget God's standard.

So what does he do when he comes back from Egypt? He makes two golden calves for the monotheistic Israelites to worship! (12:28) 😲 Unbelievable!  Well, God doesn't put up with that and ultimately takes Jeroboam out of the picture entirely (14:10)!

God doesn't tolerate duel minded people.  You can't worship God and other things too! I love how Elijah said to the people, "How long will you go limping around with two different opinions?" (18:21). It just doesn't work to try to add other things to a pure devotion to God. You are left "limping" around!

I am reminded of Jesus saying you can't serve two masters in Matthew 6:24 & Luke 16:13, James talks about split loyalties in James 1:8 & 4:4,  John warns about not loving the world and what it has to say (1 John 2:15), and here is a good one said by Paul, "You can not drink the cup of the Lord and the cup of demons' you cannot partake of the table of the Lord and the table of demons (1 Corinthians 10:21).

It is written all over the Bible that God wants a heart completely devoted to him, not split between him and something else.  This weeks reading was an excellent reminder of the result of being double minded.

Who says that Old Testament reading isn't applicable?!  It sure is!!  God doesn't change.  If Jeroboam didn't get away with it, we won't either!
