1 Peter 1- 2 Peter 2- Stand firm in your faith!

Again, in our reading this week, God uses his word to be encouraging during these uncertain times!

"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.  Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings."  (1 Peter 5:7-9)

Isn't that the truth! I was on a Zoom talk yesterday with missionary friends who live in Germany.  They described their lockdown being very similar to ours here in the USA.  Likewise, some missionary friends in Spain have been experiencing the same kind of "suffering".   Praise the Lord, these friends, have cast all their anxiety on God.  They stand firm in their faith!

What I love about the above verse is that it not only gives encouragement, it gives an action step.  I don't like just sitting back, doing nothing in times of hardship.  I feel like I need to do something as well.  Well, here it is, here is the action that is required of me: "be alert, sober-minded and stand firm".  OK! I'll do that!.....but.....exactly how do I do that?....

First, one MUST realize that we live in the middle of a spiritual battle. It's going on all around us, even though we can't see it!  Realizing this.....makes one sober up, don't you think?!  Spiritual battles are nothing to joke about!  Especially when you read Peter saying some people who are bold and arrogant are, "not afraid to heap abuse on celestial beings; yet even angels although they are stronger and more powerful, do not heap abuse on such beings when bringing judgment on them from the Lord." (2 Peter 2:10-11)
Reading that celestial (angels and demons) beings are stronger and more powerful than me sobers me up!!  It also makes me want to stay alert to what is really going on.  When things seem overwhelming and scary....wait a minute...who is making it look this way?  Could it be Saaataann?  I need to stay alert to what the spiritual realm is doing!
Demons are fighting to keep me complacent and ineffective as a Chrisitan soldier and angels are being sent to minister to me (Hebrews 1:14)!!  That is the spiritual battle!  Angels are constantly reminding me that when I am weak, Jesus is strong! (2 Corinthians 12:9) I need to stay abiding in Jesus for my strength (1 John 15:7).  Satan and his demons will do all they can to keep me from doing that!  They will keep me from Christian fellowship, reading the Word, listening to good things verses unedifying things...the list goes on.   Therefore, I need to ask myself, for example, when I'm too tired to read the Bible....what is causing me to feel so tired?! Am I really going to let Satan have power over me to keep me from my source of strength?  NO WAY!!

I will stand firm!! I will not give the enemy a foothold! (Eph 4:26)  I'm going to read even if I am lethargic, apathetic or weary.  I am going to resist the devil because I know that he will flee!!! (James 4:7). The victory is mine and it can be yours as well.  Stand firm in your faith!!!  The best thing in the world to read and remember is: cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.
You are not alone in the battle.  Jesus is with you!!😌

Thank you Anita for this most profound scripture. I Peter 5:7 is one of my memory verses, especially meaningful today. Satan intervenes in numerous phases of our life and we must not let him win! Jesus is carrying each of us during these most difficult times. HE loves us unconditionally, filling us with wisdom and guidance. Trust, Faith and HOPE in Jesus!

Amen to that Letty! Boy, is it good to memorize scripture! You picked a good one to memorize! Being able to bring memorized verses to the forefront of our minds when needed is like a soldier ready for battle at any moment. I love movie scenes where the bad guy is sneaking up on the sleeping good guy. It looks like a doomed situation with the bad guy having the upper hand, but low and behold, the good guy startles awake, grabs the weapon is at his side, and quickly defeats his enemy! The audience cheers!!

That is the one who memorizes scripture. He/she quickly grabs the weapon and defeats the enemy. The angels cheer!!

thanks for your response! Glad you are reading with me! Have a great week! On a side note, Scott and I miss your lunches!
