1 Thess. 4-5~ No surprise here!

It’s funny how verses become commonplace in our Christian culture, but the context of the verse can be forgotten. Just yesterday, I was talking about end-times with a friend and he threw out the verse, “The day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night”.  Then he added, “No one knows when he’s coming.”
I nodded in agreement, yet my heart was thinking, “Umm...that’s true....but not totally.....”. I couldn’t put my finger on what was wrong with his statement. Then, lo and behold, the Lord gave me the answer in today’s reading!! I love it when He does that!

Here is what the context of that verse actually says, “...sudden destruction will come upon them, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.  But you, brothers and sisters, are not in the dark, for this day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light and children of the day.” (5:3-5)

I think many Christians forget the second part of that section- “you are not in the dark for this day to surprise you like a thief.”
Just as Matthew referred to Noah, I can’t help but think how Noah was not surprised when it started to rain. He was not surprised when his boat started to lift up off its supports. He knew exactly what was happening. The warning is for nonbelievers. They are the ones who will be surprised.  Yes, we won’t know the exact day or hour (Matt 24:36), but we Christians certainly won’t be taken by surprise when Jesus comes.
That’s why we are alert, ready and watching for the signs.  We eagerly wait for the day to come! What a great day that will be!!
