I like chapters 17 & 18 because they give me a glimpse of what heaven will be like….or rather…what heaven won’t be like….
It’s near impossible for me to picture a life without commerce (18:22), without labor (18:22), and without marriage (18:23 & Matt. 22:30). God’s economy will be something, at this point, I can’t imagine. Yet,….how exciting to think of the possibilities of what it could be like!
The woman who sits on many waters (the water being people, multitudes, nations and languages) symbolizes everything related to greed. Desire for power, fame, prestige, wealth, popularity are basically all forms of greed. Think about it, when you get a little wealth or a little prestige, a little fame…t’s never quite enough…there is always a desire for more.
Greed, the desire to be “a something”, not “a nothing”. If everyone could understand that they are already “a something” in the eyes of their Maker,….that would be another world…right? I know I am a child of God. He loves how he made me! That makes me “a special something”. That is so much better than anything the “woman on the waters” could ever give me!
So, in the end, “she” (greed, materialism, pride, or what ever you want to call her) will no longer exist.
It’s hard to imagine what life would be like when the drive for materialism and greed is gone; the desire for “just a little bit more” will be gone! There will actually be satisfaction. That reminds me of what Jesus said to the woman at the well, “but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst.” (John 4:14)
We will never thirst for “just a little bit more” ever again! We will be totally satisfied!!! Having Jesus on the throne puts that “woman” out of business!!
