1 John 3 ~ Have I been born again? ~ Day 107

“No one who lives in him keeps on sinning.” (3:6) 😳

I know him….I am spotless in God’s eyes because of the blood of Jesus!…..but….I still sin….😬…what’s up with that?….

John even repeats himself!!! “No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God’s seed remains in them; they cannot go on sinning, because they have been born of God.” (3:9)

Uh oh, that’s enough to get me to question myself!  Have I been born of God?  (Doing a little “self-evaluation” here!)

I really appreciate my Bible’s footnote on this topic!
It reads, “No one who is born of God will continue to sin” means that true believers do not make a practice of sinning, nor do they become indifferent to God’s moral law.  All believers still sin, but they are working to gain victory over sin.  John is not talking about people whose victories are still incomplete; he is talking about people who make it a practice of sinning and look for ways to justify it.
“God’s seed remains in them” means that true believers do not make a practice of sinning because God’s new life has been born into them.

Ok, I get it now….so…the self evaluation should be to take an honest inventory of my sin.   Am I habitually justifying actions that I know are wrong or am I pleading to God to help me be victorious over the sin in my life?   My answer to myself will be tale telling as to whether I have truly been born again.

OK, that makes a little more sense- because I'm sure even John still sinned, right? But it is convicting, for me to always examine my thoughts, actions and habits for sin and ask forgiveness, and repent of them. Not to rely on legalism.

John himself said, “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves..” (1:8). Since he spoke with such conviction, I’m sure he was speaking from experience!
I like the “Lord’s prayer. Jesus knew exactly what to teach us when he said, “Pray like this, Our Father.......give us this day our daily bread and forgive us our trespasses.....” He wants us to seek him daily for our physical needs and get daily cleaning for our spiritual health. ......He’s a good, good father!!
