I believe, if you are reading daily with me, you are becoming a mature Christian. But, beware, with maturity comes responsibility.
I was struck by the fact that Paul uses the term “weak conscience” 3 times in Chapter 8. So, it made me ponder….
there is a difference between “weak” believers and strong (mature) believers. According to Paul, the weak Christian is influenced by the example of the stronger Christian. He says it is possible to cause others to sin (8:13) and destroy them (8:11)…..whoa!
What a huge responsibility we have to each other! In fact, Jesus even goes as far as to say, “Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yourself.” (Luke 17:2)
I always read that thinking Jesus was referring to nonbelievers causing believers to sin….now after today’s reading, I see it can be applied to believers as well!
I can see Paul’s point when he talks about the freedom we have in Christ, yet I have a whole new understanding now when I read, “Everything is permissible for me- but not everything is beneficial.” (6:12)
Heavy thoughts, don’t ya think?!…….Real heavy when you try to apply these principles to your life!!
