Day 18 ~ Luke 4-6

vs. 4:13- “..until an opportune time.”

I have a question for you.  Do you think that Jesus could have truly been tempted?  Did Satan really have a chance, at all, of succeeding with his temptations?  After all, even though Jesus was fully God (Heb. 2:17), he was fully man (Colossians 2:9) as well.

I often read about the temptation of Jesus (Luke 4:1-13) as just a lesson to us on how to respond to temptation (use scripture!).  We know that the word of God is “sharper than any double edged sword” (Heb 4:12), so that’s our one weapon we can use against the rulers, authorities & powers of this dark world (Eph. 6:12).

But, today 4:13 stood out to me.  Satan left Jesus after that scene and we read he would attempt to get at Jesus again at “an opportune time”. 😳
That makes me think that these  temptations were very real!  Satan actually felt he had a chance to sway Jesus.  Yet, the verses Jesus quoted show his complete faith in his heavenly father; faith that took scripture at face value.  He used scripture as his weapon as he was truly experiencing real temptation.  He trusted that this weapon would win the battle.

  1. I have thought about this too. If he couldn't have really been tempted, and chosen to sin, then he didn't have free will and wasn't fully man. He always did the will of His Father, however, and the Father was well-pleased with the Son who showed us how to resist Satan.
